Donation of your Books and Journals to the Libraries
Prospective donors should contact their subject or branch librarian and describe the items they wish to donate to the libraries. The usefullness of the donation is determined before delivery.
If your subject librarian is not available, it is possible that our Gifts Department could provide informational assistance - (573-882-4834). If your old books are rare or especially valuable, we encourage you to browse information posted by our Special Collections department.
If you prefer to donate your books to prisons, shelters and social service organizations, you could contact the Heartland Book Bank. This non-profit organization is run mostly by retired librarians. They channel donated books to prisons, abuse shelters, etc. The Heartland Book Bank has no way to pick up the books. The donor must provide transportation or shipping to get the books to their location in Kansas City. Materials that are not appropriate or are duplicated in the library may be accepted for shipment overseas to developing countries. These materials must have a copyright date of 1990 to the present. If your preference is for your books to go to needy organizations overseas, the following contacts may useful:
